Scott Johnson (DNR Biologist) was on hand to get a first hand look at the quality and age of those being checked in, with the oldest being 5 1/2 years of age. He also took glands from several deer for a random sampling to test for any presents of the Chronic Wasting Disease, which has not been found in the State to date.

Pictured with Scott Johnson (L) is Andy Ripley a student at Ball State Univ. with his major being Wildlife, one of many class assignments was to assist DNR at a check station. Andy spent opening day on the lot at Spencer Bait & Tackle. Scott's excellent training abilities enabled Andy to quickly pick up on the aging and monitoring process preformed on Whitetail Deer.

Morgan Hanbury(L) and Janeen Reed shown collecting the various types of ticks found on the Whitetail Deer for research purpose. Morgan a senior to graduate in the spring of 2008 with a degree in Natural Resource, and Janeen a junior working toward her degree in Forestry, both are students at Purdue Univ. They have spent time collecting ticks from deer in Monroe, Owen, Greene and Putnam Counties, while other teams from Purdue were sent to other counties in the state taking samples as well.

All ticks removed from a deer were bagged, sealed, and assigned a specific number relating to that deer and it's harvest location noted on a map. The data  along with  the ticks will be returned to the veterinary department at Purdue. Graduate students will perform the required test looking for lime disease concentrations in Indiana.
