Trophy Fish 2008
Gerald Buis

Gerald Buis - nickname "Catfish" of Spencer labored over an hour landing this huge 67 lb. 8 oz. Flathead Catfish from Cataract Falls on July 22, 2008. Gerald said it was a slow grueling tug of war to bring in this 50 inch long Flathead with a 33 1/2 inch girth which took nightcrawler for it's food source. The tackle of choice was a baitcasting reel, on a heavy casting rod with 20 lb. test line. Gerald weighted in at Spencer Bait & Tackle on certified deer scales and was entered into the States "Big Fish of the Year" contest.

Ron

Ron Venegas of Spencer hooked these woppers at the Lake Monroe's Spillway July 4th. The Walleye's hit curl tail jigs on 1/4 oz. lead heads and put up a great fight. As with most fish stories Ron said another bigger one broke his line and got away. But this nice pair weighed in at 3 lbs 14 oz. measuring 26 1/2 inches, and 8 lbs 7 oz. measuring 30 inches. Weigh-in took place at Spencer Bait & Tackle
Dustin
The 4-H fishing team took Tiny Town Day Care to the Owen Putnam State Forest for their 1st camping outing on June 2nd. Dustin Freeman, 9 years old, is a club member and the evening of the 2nd he hooked this monster Redear Sunfish using his ultra light spinning rod and reel, baited with nightcrawler. Dustin said it didn't take long to land it because it hit the nightcrawler right at the bank.

Dustin weighed his fish in at Spencer Bait and Tackle, and was entered into the DNR big fish of the year contest. It weighed in at 1 lb. 6 oz. with a 12 5/8 inch girth and 12 inch length. The state record is 3 lbs. 10 oz. and the 2007 big fish of the year redear weighed in at 1 lb. 9 oz. Dustin stands a good chance of winning the contest for 2008. The color is faded on Dustin's fish as it was kept overnight at the pond.
